Each year, the APPA (American Public Power Association) and its 2,000 members set aside a week in October to celebrate the American Tradition of public power. Producing 14 percent of the nation’s electricity (at not-for-profit rates), public power touches the lives of nearly 43 million people in every state, excluding Hawaii. “I personally feel that the Grand River Dam Authority’s role as a public power utility is very important, not only to our customers, but to the entire state. Oklahoma’s public power team, which includes all of GRDA’s municipal customer communities, has played a major role in the economic development and progress of Oklahoma,” said Kevin Easley, GRDA Chief Executive Officer. Public Power Week originated in 1986, to educate customers about public power’s customer ownership and not-for-profit service mission. Public Power Week has been celebrated by communities, including the GRDA and its customer communities ever since. Here in Oklahoma, GRDA is proud to partner with towns, cities and other power suppliers to form the state’s public power team. “The beneficial partnerships GRDA has with most of its |

municipal customers are over a half century old, and the growth and development of GRDA is a direct result of a customer desire to always have abundant, low-cost, reliable electricity,” said Easley. Public power is not a new idea or a recent concept. Nationwide and in Oklahoma, it is a tradition that has worked for many years. This is because public power means local control of local power to match local needs. Public power means low electric rates generating revenues that are returned to the utilities to create more electricity. Public power keeps ratepayer dollars where they are needed most, in public power communities. GRDA joins with all public power communities throughout Oklahoma in celebrating the 22nd anniversary of public power during National Public Power Week 2008.
