GRDA Offering Free Boating Courses
Vinita – In a continuing effort to educate the public about
the Kyle Williams Boating Safety Education Act, the Grand River Dam Authority
is offering two boater education courses, free of charge, in April and May.
The first course will be held on Saturday, April 25, at the
Best Western Hotel in Locust Grove. A second course will be held on Saturday,
May 2, at the Grove Community Center in Grove. Classes begin at 9 AM and last until 4 PM.
The Kyle Williams Act prohibits children between the ages of
12 and 16 years of age; without a valid driver’s license, from operating any
vessel powered by a motor of more than 10 horsepower, or a sailing vessel 16
feet or longer, without first completing a state approved boater safety course.
These free courses, offered by GRDA, provide the necessary certification. GRDA
also encourages adults to take the course.
Children in this age group are also required to have a
certificate documenting their completion of the course. Fines for violating the
law can range from $50 to $500.
For more information, or to reserve your space in one of the
upcoming courses, contact Joyce Morgan at the GRDA Lake Patrol Office (918 782
9594).
