GRDA Floodwater release bulletin – 11:00 a.m. 05/29/08

At 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 29:

• Grand Lake elevation was 746.59 feet.
• Grand Lake flood pool was at 14.26 percent capacity.
• At the direction of the United States Army Corps of Engineers, thirteen (13) floodgates were open at Pensacola Dam, discharging 35,006 cubic feet per second (cfs) of water.
• Six (6) units were online at the Pensacola Dam powerhouse, releasing 14,074 cfs of water through generation.
• Releases through floodgates and generation totaled 49,080 cfs.
• Inflows into Grand Lake totaled 47,210 cfs.
• Lake Hudson elevation was 621.25 feet.
• Lake Hudson flood pool was at 10.54 percent capacity.
• Three (3) floodgates were open at Robert S. Kerr Dam, discharging 33,014 cfs of water.
• Three (3) units were online at Robert S. Kerr Dam powerhouse releasing 20,520 cfs of water through generation.
• Releases through floodgates and generation totaled 53,534 cfs.
• Inflows into Lake Hudson totaled 50,073 cfs.

According to the latest models from the United States Army Corps of Engineers, both lakes have crested. Additional gate operations are planned for both dams on Saturday.

The Grand River watershed consists of approximately 12,000 square miles of runoff in parts of Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. Of that total, over half—7,000 square miles—is uncontrolled runoff, meaning there is no reservoir to control it above the Pensacola Dam. However, the remaining 5,000 square miles of runoff passes through the John Redmond Dam, located near Burlington, Kansas, prior to reaching the Grand River system in Oklahoma.
